1. What is your inspiration for working as a Naturopath, Emily? What is your bigger picture for human beings and health?

My inspiration for becoming a Naturopath was my biggest life crisis. At the ripe old age of 21 I contracted glandular fever, chronic fatigue and depression from being everything everyone expected of me and having no idea who I was and in denial of how powerful I was!

I was working long days in a law firm and studying law at night.

I was extremely grateful for this happening to me so early because it allowed me 6 weeks in hospital, a huge insight into the medical model which seemed to be disempowering and medicating me further and forcing me into a darker place than where I was.   I couldn’t help but be reminded by a voice deep within me that I was able to get through this and heal myself.

After a lot of time in hospital I had had enough and a feeling of empowerment rose within me, and with the help of my mother we were off to the Naturopath to look for another solution as we both felt more diagnosis and medication were not the way forward for me.

I went through extensive sand play counselling sessions to unravel pain that I had accumulated in my heart through school bullying and not knowing how to protect myself.  I unravelled layers of who I was with nutrition education, counselling and herbal medicine.

I quit law within a month and enrolled in Naturopathic Medicine and commenced in 2001.

From that moment on I was committed to laying down a path for people to come back to themselves, who they truly are, what they feel about their bodies, what makes them sing, what makes them smile and what makes them dance.  I found the physical application of nutrition, counselling, herbal medicine and homoeopathy a great tool to allow people to trust who they are and remove blocks to FREE THEMSELVES and KNOW THEMSELVES enough to trust what is best for them.

My bigger picture for human beings and health is to share the message that it can be effortless to trust that inner voice and calm the mind to trust what you already know in your heart.

2. Why are we not getting enough nutrients from our food?

i. SOIL QUALITY

Organic or non organic soil is being turned over much more frequently than it used to, therefore depleting the soil of nutrients, and therefore the quality and quantity of nutrients within our food.

ii. ABILITY TO ABSORB

So much of my practice is dealing with people’s inability to absorb nutrients through the gut lining due to poor digestive function.

iii. CONSUMPTION OF SUBSTANCES that cause the excretion of vital nutrients and minerals, such as OCP oral contraceptive pill, coffee, sugar, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, high salt diet, many pharmaceutical drugs and cigarettes. An immaculate diet doesn’t counteract the nutrient excretion that the above substances cause therefore its vital to boost nutrient contents.

iv. ABSORPTION OF SYNTHETIC and POOR QUALITY VITAMINS is becoming increasingly more difficult as the body does not recognise them as food.

v.Quite simply: WE DO TOO MUCH

There are enormous physical and emotional demands on our bodies these days. We have become mad in terms of what we expect from our bodies, we train hard, we over-stimulate ourselves, we don’t rest enough, we work too hard, we don’t sleep enough, we have multiple children one after the other, we party hard, we have technology and radiation, mobile phones, computers at an arms length. These are all factors that increase the need for good nutrients in our diets, for example, someone who works long hours and only sleeps 6 hours per night will burn B vitamins and magnesium at the rate of knots over someone who meditates and keeps a slower pace.

vi. POOR DIET: LOW INTAKE OF NUTRIENTS

Perhaps your diet doesn’t contain enough nutrients, you aren’t eating your fruit and vegetables, lean good quality organic animal proteins, nuts and seeds and superfoods.

3. What role do you feel superfoods play in optimum health?

Superfoods are high nutrient foods, that provide large amounts of nutrients in high concentrations and with a vast array of phyto-chemicals, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

They have the ability to lift your nutrient status and fill any gaps you have in your diet.  Once you have basic fundamentals of your diet ie. clean lean proteins, 3-4 serves vegetables, adequate hydration, mindsets, little or no toxins (alcohol, caffeine, sugar and refined carbs) then SUPERFOODS are a brilliant way of further increasing your overall well-being, energy and longevity.

4. What is your take on simulated vitamins?

Some vitamins are OK, for use short term to shift the chemical structure of the body. Provided these are well researched, high quality, well absorbed only with limited excipients (fillers etc), only something a well researched Naturopath would know.

Whilst supplementation is important and used in my practice it is not a long term solution.  I use supplementation whilst we getting the clients general diet tweaked, manageable and sustainable.  Food based nutrients is what will properly carry you long term and makes more sense in terms of sustainability.

5. What are some of your favourite ingredients in MANA Blend and why?

They are all awesome!  But my top two are:

CHLORELLA because it is detoxifying for heavy metals and we are accumulating so many more derivatives of radiation and heavy metals through lifestyle, unfiltered water, use of microwaves and pollution, that there isn’t much else within our diets that can do this for us. So it really is unique in its function!

MACA powder because it so beautifully supports the hormonal systems of men and women, reducing accumulated xeno-oestrogens and nourishing with the widest profile of vitamins and minerals.  An amazing tonic for all generations and concerns.

6. What’s it like being part of the MANA Blend team?

It is an honour to be a part of the MANA Blend team. We are all individually passionate about creating products that make good health easy and that provide the best quality ingredients for our beautiful bodies.

Ever since meeting Lisa and Chrissie I could feel their purpose and power from the heart, it isn’t usual that this exists in business and I am passionate myself about business from the HEART.

It has been dynamic and hugely rewarding to touch so many people with MANA Blend and it is creating profound change in people’s lives so I feel blessed to be a part of something that is so PURE and POWERFUL.
